Americans Now Say Gov't Should Not Favor Any Set of Values

In reading the article "Americans Now Say Gov't Should Not Favor Any Set of Values" just goes to show how split we are as a nation. The orthodox view involves maintaing and promoting traditional values, whereas, the progressive view believes that no values shall be possessed by our government. Back in the late 1990's, and then again in the period after 9/11, people favored the tradional values heavily because of the patriotism and unification that spurred from the attacks. However, since then apathy has corroded the minds of many, especially our new generatinos, which has caused the transformation to 52% for no values, and 44% for traditional values. Personally, I feel that a successful government is built by a coalition of many ideas and opinions, including the tradional values that made this country so great in the first place. With that in mind, I understand that times are changing and that we can not wallow in the past, but that doesn't mean we should abandon common sense values--neither should our elected officials. My conflict with the notion of "favoring no values" is that it is merely impossible for man (mankind as a whole, you feminists!) to be objective at all times when deciding on what is best for the American people through the voices of the people. At some point we must come to conclusion that the government consists of human beings who rationalize and think for themselves (I hope, anyways), which means that values are bound to arise in order for this nation to continue and prosper.
